Solving Problems with Opening the Guide
I try and open the NCG file but get a message that it can't find Adobe Reader, or I get a blank white screen, even though I have Adobe Reader installed and can read PDF files with it.
There are two possible issues here:
-
Either you have an old version of Adobe Reader or the version you have is damaged and is not properly registered with Windows. This can still be the problem even if you can open a PDF file from within Adobe Reader. The easiest solution is to remove Adobe Reader from your computer using the Add or Remove Programs option under the Control Panel and then to download the latest version from www.adobe.com. The Reader upgrade is free.
-
A second posibility is that at some point in the activation process or when opening the Guide your firewall software detected the Guide trying to access the Internet and asked you if you will allow this. If you said No you will get this problem. The best answer is to tell your firewall to always allow the Guide to access the Internet. Note that it will identify the application as Secure-eBook.
I use a third party reader to read PDF files instead of Adobe Reader and I can't read the Guide using this other reader.
The Guide is only designed to work with Adobe Reader.
I have a third party PDF reader though I still have Adobe Reader on my computer. I realize that the Guide requires Adobe Reader and so I have set Adobe Reader to be the default program for reading PDF files but it still doesn't work with the Guide.
When you installed the third party reader, the connection that the Guide uses to find Adobe Reader got broken. This is a different connection than that used to open a file. (It is the same as the connection that browsers use to find a PDF reader.) The easiest solution is to remove and then reinstall Adobe Reader on to your computer (see the directions above).
I have activated the Guide but can only find about 100 pages of 'General Cruising Information'. Where are the 'Harbours and Anchorages'?
The Guide is in two volumes and will always open in Volume I, 'General Cruising Information'. To change to the 'Harbours and Anchorages' section, go to the top left hand corner under the eBook menu and select Volume II.
I have activated the Guide but I can't read the Guide unless I am connected to the Internet. It opens but I just get a white screen. When I’m online it works fine.
This can happen, although rarely, when Secure-eBook thinks the Guide has been moved since activation. The solution is:
-
Go online with your computer in the same configuration that you will use it offline.
-
Open the Guide.
-
Go to Help/About Secure-eBook.
-
Copy the Activation Key you see there. You can do this easily by selecting the code by double clicking on it and pressing the Ctrl and C keys at the same time.
-
Go to Help/Deactivate eBook on the top left of the screen.
-
Deactivate the Guide; it will go into Sample Chapter mode.
-
Go to eBook/Activate eBook on the top left of your screen.
-
Type in the Activation Key that you got in Step 4 or press the Ctrl and V keys at the same time.
-
Use the Guide offline in this configuration.
I downloaded the Guide and forgot where I put it on my computer, how can I find it?
These instructions are for Windows XP only:
-
Go to the Start menu on the bottom left and select Search.
-
Under 'What do you want to search for?' select 'All files and folders'. DO NOT USE ANY OTHER OPTION HERE.
-
In the white box under 'All or part of the filename:' type exactly as shown below:
NCG.exe -
Click Search.
-
After the search is completed, go to the View menu and select Details.
-
All the copies of NCG.exe on your computer will be listed in the window to the right looking like this:

Note that copies that look like this:
(with the little arrow in the graphic) are just Windows short cuts and are not duplicate Guides. Also note that, depending on how your computer is set up, the .exe ending may not show. -
The folder on your computer that the Guide is stored in will display in the right column. You can move the Guide to another folder by opening the new folder and then dragging the NCG.exe file out of the Search window and into the new folder.
Question: I downloaded the Guide and forgot where I put it on my computer, so I downloaded it again. Now I think that I may have more than one copy on my computer. Will this cause me problems?
Yes it could, particularly when it comes to time to upgrade to a new version. These instructions are for Windows XP only:
-
Search for all copies of the Guide as detailed in the question above..
-
If you only see one copy and that is the one you are using and the latest version, then everything is fine. If you see more than one copy, you should delete the duplicate copies, but leave the one that you are using.
-
Do not delete any files that contain NCG in longer file names.
