Waypoints

Imagine that you are out sailing along the Norwegian coast and it's late in the afternoon. What ports and anchorages are close? What anchoring/mooring facilities do they have? What is there to do?

A quick glance at your chart plotter or navigation software shows a waypoint at every port or anchorage covered by the Norwegian Cruising Guide (see the chart below showing the Lofoten area with our waypoints shown in bold type). Zoom in on the name, look it up in the 'Index' of the Guide, and your questions are answered.

Waypoint Chart

To keep things organized while writing the Norwegian Cruising Guide, we built a waypoint file of all 810 harbours and anchorages covered by the Guide. We have found it invaluable and so are including it free with each purchase of the Guide.

Note that this is what the software industry would call a beta test product and there are some issues:

  • The waypoints are at the approximate position of the harbours and are for planning use only. They are not for navigational use.

  • We are currently supplying the file in formats that can be loaded into C-MAP PC Planner and DigiBOAT Software-On-Board. This is all we have tested. The good news is that Software-On-Board (SOB), a very functional PC navigation program, is available for a 6 month free demo period and then it's just US$50.00 after that. Unfortunately, SOB only supports C-MAP charts.

  • See www.digiboat.com.au for more information on SOB and http://pcplanner.c-map.it/ for more on PC Planner.

  • If you decide not to use one of the options above, you will need to consult your charting software or plotter manual, or your dealer, to determine how to load the file in to your equipment. We are not in a position to provide support on this.

  • We would be very grateful if you would inform us of loading solutions that work. We will post them on this website so that others can benefit.

  • You will automatically receive your password to download the file after buying the Norwegian Cruising Guide.
